The Sensitivity settings, volume and Target ID range are all the same but it now has 6 different search modes – Field, Park, 4 Tone, 99 Tone, Beach and All Metal which are all accessible with one touch on the screen. To further help define your search parameters you also have Notch Discrimination which helps to weed out unwanted metals and the ability to shift the frequency in small increments, allowing you to really zero in on what you’re after. One particular thing I like is the vibration function which is really useful when detecting underwater or for those who are hard of hearing, making metal detecting a little more accessible for everyone.
The Simplex Ultra is waterproof up to a depth of 5 metres and, as well as having a backlight on the screen, it also comes with an LED flashlight so you can see what you’re doing if you are going underwater with your detecting. Very handy for valuables that may have got lost for example! There are additional features such as target ID depth, tone break, frequency and volume so you can really tailor what you hear to match what you’re looking for. All in all, this is a great metal detector, particular for the ease of use making it a good starting point for beginners but still useful for more experienced detectorists. RRP £339.95
