Gone are the days when cars were just simple mechanical vehicles getting us from A to B and we had the knowledge and know-how to fix them on the roadside. Nowadays, you’d be lucky to get just a flat tire – probably one of the only elements left on a car that you can do yourself without having to take it to the garage and incurring a hefty repair bill! With so much useful and good digital technology packed in to cars it is somewhat inevitable that repairing cars has become more and more of a specialised skillset than ever.

The Topscan from Topdon aims to help the average person unravel some of that technical finesse and actually be able to do something about it. It’s a scanning tool that combines with your mobile phone (Android 7.0 & iOS 10.0 & above) and can locate and diagnose problems for you. As well as that, it’s actually able to fix some of them by fixing fault codes too! Speaking of codes, the Topscan also comes with a DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Codes – used by engineers to determine problems with a car) repair guide that, once it has determined the code meaning, gives you solutions on how to repair it.

As well as the above the Topscan includes reset options for 8 of the most common features in cars that need re-setting to fix problems. These include Throttle Adaptation, ABS Bleeding, Steering Angle, Airbag, Oil, EPB, DPF Regeneration and BMS. The app can also test emissions, determine your engine volume efficiency and generate diagnostic reports so you can actually compare the found problems with what’s been solved, ensuring you get the results you’re after. There’s a lot more you can achieve with this bit of kit but the final thing I will mention is the Warning Light Library, very handy when that light pops up on the dashboard and you can’t find your manual!
