Open ear audio is rising in popularity, so we were excited to see Shokz latest offer which has changed up the design from a hook fit to a clip-on style. As always, the focus is on awareness and comfort rather than sealing you off from the world. Instead of sitting inside the ear canal, they use an open ear design that rests just outside, allowing you to hear your surroundings while listening to music or calls.

This makes them particularly useful for running, cycling, or commuting whilst staying aware of traffic and people around you. The Shokz JointArc, is a super-thin and flexible titanium alloy that connects the battery and earbud from the back of the ear around to the front. With everyone ears being uniquely shaped it won’t suit everyone, there are mixed results with some saying they become uncomfortable after awhile and others having issues with movement. However, it appears that if the fit is right, the hold securely and remain comfortable through long listening sessions. Because nothing sits deep in the ear, they feel lighter and less intrusive over longer periods. There is no pressure build up, which can be a relief if you usually struggle with in ear designs.

Sound quality is naturally a bit different from traditional earbuds. It delivers surprisingly powerful bass for an open ear design. It uses a dual-driver system, equivalent to a 16mm3 custom driver and enhanced by Bassphere technology. The OpenBass 2.0 algorithm adds some textured to the bass and you can customise your sound and with 4 preset EQs and 2 custom modes.

Battery life is solid with 10 hours play time and up to 40 hours with the use of the charging case, just 10 mins will give you 2 hours of power. Controls are simple and responsive, making it easy to adjust volume or take calls without breaking your stride. There is no left or right to worry about. Both earbuds can be used in either year or in either port in the charging case.

The Shokz OpenDots One are designed for a specific type of user. If you want immersive audio and full isolation, they may not be the right fit. But for active use, commuting, or anyone who prefers a more open listening experience, they offer a comfortable and practical alternative to standard earbuds with the right fit. RRP £179
