It can be easy to look at the xDuoo DM-01 and think it’s a toy of some kind but under the colourful robot body is a very technical bit of audio equipment. It is a desktop DAC and headphone amp with a glowing 12AU7 tube, Bluetooth support, and enough retro sci fi styling to satisfy the child in you. Thankfully, it is more than just a novelty.
Inside, the DM 01 combines a Cirrus Logic CS43131 DAC with a hybrid tube and transistor amplifier design, delivering up to 1.5W into 32 ohms through its 6.35mm output. This delivers a warmer, fuller presentation than many clinical sounding desktop DAC amps around this price. Bass sounds rounded and rich, vocals feel smooth and relaxed, and treble keeps enough sparkle to avoid sounding dull. It is the sort of tuning bring to life your digital music, especially rock, jazz, funk, and acoustic music.
There are all the useful modern features including USB C input that supports PCM up to 32 bit/384kHz and DSD256, while Bluetooth 5.4 includes LDAC, aptX Adaptive, aptX HD, AAC, and SBC support. That means you can use it as a proper desktop setup or simply stream wirelessly from a phone or tablet without much hassle.
Build quality feels reassuringly solid the aluminium chassis has real weight to it, and the mechanical switch controls add a tactile, playful feel. The glowing LED “eyes” and interchangeable acrylic front inserts make it look different from the endless sea of plain black audio boxes.
There are a few points to consider however, the sensitive IEMs can pick up some hiss, there is no balanced headphone output, and the button-based volume controls feel less intuitive than a proper dial. Still, if you want desktop audio gear with personality, warmth, and genuinely enjoyable sound rather than purely sterile measurements, the DM 01 is a lot of fun. RRP $279
