Spending more than £200 on a headphone cable might bonkers to some, especially in this day and age of easy access to media from ever device. Yet the ddHiFi BC150G is aimed squarely at audiophiles who have already invested in serious headphones and want a cable to match, they are looking for quality and willing to pay for it.
Part of the Nyx Gold series, the BC150G certainly looks the part. Its champagne gold finish is paired with aluminium alloy fittings and genuine red sandalwood detailing, giving it a rather luxurious appearance. It’s a refreshing change from the usual black rubber cables, although at this price, you’d expect something a little special.
Underneath that handsome exterior is an elaborate conductor arrangement combining high purity 4N silver for the positive signal and 5N OCC copper for the negative. A separate silver-plated copper shielding layer is designed to reduce electromagnetic interference, while the floating shield construction helps prevent grounding issues with certain audio equipment.
The symmetrical double strand construction and flexible SoftFlex PVC insulation help prevent the cable from becoming an expensive, tangled nightmare in your pocket. At approximately 65g for the 145cm version, it has some substance without being particularly bulky.
The BC150G terminates in a 4.4mm balanced plug, with headphone connectors available for a wide range of models, including options for Sennheiser, Focal and Sony. You can also choose between 145cm and 200cm lengths, although some connector configurations are made to order.
Of course, the big question is whether it sounds better. The sophisticated construction is intended to maintain clean signal transmission, but don’t expect a cable to magically transform your headphones. Any audible improvement will depend on your existing equipment and whether your current cable has limitations.
Ultimately, the BC150G is a beautifully considered accessory for someone who takes their listening setup seriously. It’s expensive, undeniably indulgent and probably unnecessary for most people, but the craftsmanship and attention to detail are difficult to ignore. RRP $259.99
