Periodic Audio Beryllium 4

This is the first time I’ve seen a set of earbuds that have a separate jack that connects to the wire that connects to the device you’re actually playing the music from (still with me?). They’re nothing new but it’s the first time I’ve seen any! The advantage of this set up is that if the wires break or get caught up, you can replace them without having to buy a whole new set which certainly appeals to a clumsy old fool like me…

Most ear buds of this ilk rely on MMCX (Micro Miniature Co-aXial) Connectors which can be very delicate and prone to breaking so Periodic Audio have come up with a world first to get around this problem! Introducing the world’s smallest 2.5mm jack. At just 3.6mm across and with a mounting depth of 9.5mm, these tiny little jacks are far more secure and sturdy than others on the market. But this isn’t the only thing these buds have going for them. As their name would suggest (and is a theme that Periodic Audio have adopted for all of their ear buds – defining them by the periodic symbol of the metal used), Beryllium is in these ear buds and has been used to create the transducer diaphragm, which basically means minimum distortion due to a combination of the metal not bending on its own and the ability to dissipate internal energy quite efficiently.

All the above translates in to a very good listen indeed. The clarity is there alongside a generous bass sound, both in quantity and quality and a good, rich mid-range too with great clarity on vocals, both male and female. There are other buds at a similar price level that exceed the Beryllium in certain areas but these are a great all-rounder and I somehow don’t think anyone will regret buying them, despite the high price tag. RRP $249
