Soundpeats UU2 4.5

The SoundPEATS UU2 has attempted to take on an issue that open ear earbuds often struggle with and that’s bass, but more on that in a bit. The benefit of open ear audio is that rather than sealing your ears away from the world, these clip around them, leaving your ears open so you can still hear what is happening around you.

Each bud weighs around 5g and uses a flexible bridge, making them light enough for long listening sessions and a particularly good option if you find conventional in ear buds uncomfortable. The open design also makes then useful for running or walking when you want your music without completely disappearing into your own little audio bubble. They have an IPX5 rating for sweat and splashes too.

Sound comes from a 12mm dual magnet dynamic driver, with DynamicEQ helping give the UU2 considerably more low end than you might expect from an open ear design. Bass is punchy rather than merely hinted at, while vocals remain clear and the treble gives enough to stop things sounding flat. Getting the position right is important, though, as the bass can change noticeably depending on how the buds sit around your ears, this can take a bit of practice.

Bluetooth 6.0 brings LDAC support, multipoint connectivity and a claimed range of up to 15 metres, while the physical buttons are a welcome choice over fiddly touch controls. There is also a SoundPEATS app with EQ customisation, spatial audio and other settings, including a useful hearing based adaptive EQ.

The battery life won’t let you down with up to 10 hours from the buds and 42 hours including the charging case. A quick 10 minute charge provides around two hours of playback.

They aren’t perfect however, sound leakage is inevitable with an open design, calls are manageable but not brilliant and there is no ANC, obviously. But for anyone wanting comfortable, awareness friendly earbuds without sacrificing all their bass, the UU2 is a surprisingly capable little package. RRP £59.99
