reMarkable Paper Pure 5

There is something rather appealing about a gadget that deliberately does less. The reMarkable Paper Pure is not trying to replace your laptop, but instead provide all the convenience of a digital note book without the notifications, social media distractions and Wikipedia rabbit holes.

The 10.3 inch monochrome Canvas display uses E Ink Carta 1300 and has a textured glass surface designed to recreate the drag of pen on paper. More importantly, the gap between the Marker tip and digital ink has been reduced to just 0.8mm, helping your handwriting appear almost exactly where you expect it to. It feels quick, precise and considerably more natural than scribbling on a shiny tablet screen.

At around 360g and 6mm thick, the Paper Pure is light enough to carry around without giving your back something else to complain about. The standard Marker attaches magnetically and charges wirelessly on the tablet, while the pricier Marker Plus adds a built-in eraser. There are enough tools to help keep your notes organised without getting too hung up on design. These include nine different writing tools like ballpoint pens in different thicknesses, or pencils to sketch and highlighters.

Notes can be organised into folders, converted from handwriting into typed text and synced with the reMarkable desktop and mobile apps. PDFs and EPUB files can also be imported for reading or annotation. There are no distracting apps or notifications competing for attention, which is either wonderfully refreshing particularly if you have an easily distractable character like I do.

Battery life is excellent, with up to three weeks from a charge, and the 32GB of storage leaves plenty of room for notebooks and documents.

The main omission is a front light, so bedtime note taking still requires an actual lamp but that is part of the appeal, less disruptive blue light pouring into your eyes. Some cloud features and handwriting search also sit behind the optional Connect subscription.

The Paper Pure is intentionally uncomplicated. If you want an all purpose tablet, look elsewhere. If you want somewhere to think, scribble, plan and write without another notification appearing, its simplicity makes an awful lot of sense. RRP From £359
