It is well documented that regulating your breathing can help your wellbeing in all manner of ways – from better sleeping habits to calming yourself down or just feeling more relaxed, simple breathing exercises can go a long way to helping you out. However, it’s not always easy to get your concentration focused in the right way to benefit from them. Moonbird is an aide to doing exactly this. And, rather than relying on verbal or visual cues, this is a physical object that you hold in your hand that ‘breathes’ when you switch it on by placing your thumb over the switch. When it expands, you breathe in and when it contracts, you breathe out. A simple, tactile way to establish your breathing pattern that can allow you to focus without being distracted.

You can use it as many times a day as you like – there’s no limit, but they do recommend starting with 2 or 3 sessions a day, each one lasting about 4-6 minutes just so you get used to using the tool. After that, you can use it whenever you feel the need to use it and you don’t even have to use the app that they provide. Although it does give a whole load of extra to the Moonbird. For instance, you can choose your own breathing exercise or rhythm that best suits you and also get to see real-time info such as your heart rate and heart rate variability and then adjust accordingly. You can also access historic data in the form of statistics so you can see how much of an impact the Moonbird is actually having. And, for those who prefer an audio experience, there are in-app guides on Stress, HRV, Anxiety and insomnia.

The fact that you can use the Moonbird just as it is without the app is a great move in my opinion. I don’t know about you but the very act of checking my stats to see how I have improved is likely the sort of thing that is going to get me stressed in the first place! So, I welcome this feature.
