We have a racetrack in our house that periodically gets dragged out, takes forever to put together and then gets played with for about 30mins before it gets abandoned for another toy. The problem is with a fixed racetrack is that, once a child has learnt every bend, there is little left to do but race the cars again. Playmags takes a different approach, the track is something children build for themselves, pull apart and change whenever a better idea comes along.

This 200 piece set is recommended for ages three and up, it combines colourful magnetic tiles with track sections and supports, so children can make more than a simple loop on the floor. Curves, slopes and raised sections give them room to experiment with the layout, while signs add a little detail to the finished scene. The magnetic connections make rebuilding easy, although an ambitious elevated track may still need a patient pair of hands. The magnets are strong but will still collapse under an enthusiastic younger siblings’ hands.

Two motorised cars are included, which gives the building a clear purpose, make a route, see how the cars handle it, then work out what needs changing. The cars have lights and each needs two AA batteries, which are not included. It is worth having those ready if this is a present, unless you fancy explaining that the exciting part will have to wait until tomorrow.

There is plenty of play here beyond racing. A younger child might enjoy joining pieces and watching the cars travel around, while an older one can spend longer planning routes, building upwards and solving the inevitable collapses. With 200 pieces, two children should have enough to work on a layout together, though the set will claim a fair amount of floor space once they get going.
