THIEAUDIO Cypher 4

The THIEAUDIO Cypher marks the brand’s return to full sized headphones. Its open back design uses a newly developed 50mm dynamic driver, built around a 20 core N45 magnet array and a semi crystalline polymer and rubber composite diaphragm.

The tuning is focused around the midrange with a strong emphasis on clarity. Vocals come through particularly clearly, while acoustic instruments have plenty of texture and smaller details in a recording are easy to pick out. Bass is controlled and well defined rather than especially forceful, so bass heads out there looking for thumping low end may find the Cypher a little restrained for their tastes. There is also some extra energy around the upper mids, which can become noticeable at louder volumes.

Being open backed, there is a good sense of space around music, with precise imaging that makes it easy to place instruments within a mix. The presentation is more focused than enormous, but it works well for critical listening, acoustic music and vocal heavy tracks.

Build quality is solid with a unique look, the earcups are machined from solid aerospace grade aluminium, while the headband combines stainless steel and carbon fibre with genuine lambskin trim. Velour memory foam ear pads attach magnetically, making replacement straightforward. At 411g, the Cypher is not particularly light, although the soft pads and adjustable headband help spread the weight.

Impedance is rated at 32 ohms with 96dB sensitivity and a frequency response of 20Hz to 20kHz. The supplied 1.5 metre braided cable connects to each earcup using 3.5mm plugs and has a standard 3.5mm connection, with a 6.3mm adapter included. Balanced connectivity requires a separate cable.

The Cypher is best suited for listeners who appreciate neutrality, vocals and fine detail around the mids. It is beautifully built, comfortable once adjusted and offers a clear, revealing sound without trying to impress through sheer bass quantity. RRP $399
